The team at Dannywired got to chat with Mzulu and this is what he had to say.

Who is Mzulu?
Mzulu is a -eMatshana (eMpangeni) born and bred multitalented trained theatre artist who sings, acts, dance and direct theatre plays.

Where your passion of music comes from?
My passion of music comes is something that I would say I was born with. Mzulu was raised in a musical family which also has a community church within the yard where Mzulu sang in its choir and also participated and led handful of community choirs in Empangeni.

Musically from 2007 to 2020, how have you been keeping yourself busy?
Basically for the past years Mzulu has been working on building Mzulu as brand, my versatility has kept me relevant at all times, after taking a long break in theatre, I have worked with prominent artists with the likes of DJ Fisherman, Big Nuz, Dumi Mkokstad, Duncan, Hlengiwe Mhlaba to name a few.

What drew you out of the theatre to live recordings of music?
Music was my first love before theatre, when I was given a chance in music I grabbed it with both hands, hence I’m here today.

Out of all the artist you have worked with, who would you say was your favourite and why?
My favourite artist is Zakwe. Zakwe and I have always been those soul brothers, Zakwe is my inspiration, have worked in a
number of projects together and we have always given each other tones of support and respect on and off work.

As a musician, how has the lockdown affected you?
It has affected me in two ways, negatively and positively. Negatively it has ripped me apart financially, we have not been working for the past six month and received no income which made life very tough. On the other side it taught me a lot of things like
being a fully complaint artist, should times like these comes again, I should be well prepared for me to get support that offered during a pandemic. And it has also positively helped me finish and plan for my album release.

If you could go back 10 years in time, what would you say to your younger self?

I would say, ” as you taking this journey bear in mind that it is not going to be easy, you will have times of joy and times where you will feel like giving up but never give up instead soldier on and keep your eyes on the prize.

Tell us more about your latest single?
My latest single titled “Ubukhona” is basically acknowledging and thanking the almighty creator for everything that he has done for me especially in this tough industry.

In what headspace were you when you wrote your single?
I was reflecting back into my life, battles of life that I won without any strength in me to fight them but I have found myself winning them which made me realise that it was not just me but the almighty.

What can fan expect from you for the rest of 2020?

Right now my single is out and available on all digital platforms and we are currently working on the single’s launch which will be launched soon all over the country starting with KZN while preparing for my album release early next year.
